Trends in the Solution of Distributed Data Placement Problem

    Get PDF
Data placement for optimal performance is an old problem. For example the problem dealt with the placement of relational data in distributed databases, to achieve optimal query processing time. Heterogeneous distributed systems with commodity processors evolved in response to requirement of storage and processing capacity of enormous scale. Reliability and availability are accomplished by appropriate level of data replication, and efficiency is achieved by suitable placement and processing techniques. Where to place which data, how many copies to keep, how to propagate updates so as to maximize the reliability, availability and performance are the issues addressed. In addition to processing costs, the network parameters of bandwidth limitation, speed and reliability have to be considered. This paper surveys the state of the art of published literature on these topics. We are confident that the placement problem will continue to be a research problem in the future also, with the parameters changing. Such situations will arise for example with the advance of mobile smart phones both in terms of the capability and applications

Computer-based knowledge and computation systems are becoming major sources of leverage for multiple industry segments. Hence, educational systems and learning processes across the world are on the cusp of a major digital transformation. This paper seeks to explore the concept of an artificial intelligence and natural language processing (NLP) based intelligent tutoring system (ITS) in the context of computer education in primary and secondary schools. One of the components of an ITS is a learning assistant, which can enable students to seek assistance as and when they need, wherever they are. As part of this research, a pilot prototype chatbot was developed, to serve as a learning assistant for the subject Scratch (Scratch is a graphical utility used to teach school children the concepts of programming). By the use of an open source natural language understanding (NLU) or NLP library, and a slackbased UI, student queries were input to the chatbot, to get the sought explanation as the answer. Through a two-stage testing process, the chatbot’s NLP extraction and information retrieval performance were evaluated. The testing results showed that the ontology modelling for such a learning assistant was done relatively accurately, and shows its potential to be pursued as a cloud-based solution in future

Eurobowmaniella simulans is the commonly available species of mysid along the Vizhinjam coast of Kerala. Sampling of mysids has been carried out over a period of one year from March 2014 to February 2015 to study the seasonal availability and population structure. Monthly samples of mysids consisted of individuals in various developmental stages, from juveniles to mature mysids around the year, but their percentage availability varied. The peak availability of mysids was recorded during September (2014) (avg. 48,731 numbers per haul) and their availability was lowest in July (2014) with an average of 2 individuals per haul. The availability of brooding or ovigerous females were observed throughout the year and highest and lowest percentage availability was during November (2014) and April (2014) respectively. Morphometric measurements of E. simulans revealed that their average size (TL) ranged from 2.35±0.52 mm- (juvenile) to 7.47±1.75 mm (adult). Sex could be first distinguished externally when mysid attains the total length between 4.1 mm and 5 mm. Analysis of variance of different water quality parameters and mysid density comparing seasons revealed that there was significant variation of mysid availability between seasons (P < 0.05). Multivariate Pearson’s correlation analysis of water quality parameters and mysid density showed that there was a significant relation with chlorophyll a content (P < 0.001) of seawater. The present study also revealed that mysids are available in harvestable quantities for aquaculture purposes from August to November

    Get PDF
Neural Networks (NN) has been used to solve wide variety of problems, one of them is stock market prediction. Neural Networks are modeled to predict future value of stock market using historical data. In this paper, a Multilayer perceptron (MLP) Neural Network is used to predict future stock market. Two MLP Neural Networks have been used, one is trained using Least Mean Square algorithm and another one using Sigmoid Delta algorithm. RMS error is calculated against actual and predicted value. Results have shown that MLP Neural Network with LMS training algorithm has lower RMS error than MLP Neural Network with sigmoid delta learning algorithm. The process of training large scale Neural Networks is both computation-intensive and data-intensive. Entire training workflow needs to carry out thousands of epochs’ iteration, which makes it computationally expensive. On the other hand, in order to generate better results, large scale training datasets are usually used in applications. As a result, training large scale Neural Networks on a single PC is usually very time-consuming. To address this, MLP Neural Network model is implemented in MapReduce programming model with Hadoop framework. Since the MapReduce programming model has the ability to rapidly process large amount of data in parallel. Hence MapReduce works with Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS). The entire process of predicting stock market using Neural Network in Hadoop’s fully distributed mode  and using HDFS the implementation results shows the effectiveness in reducing the time of prediction process with better accurac
